The Indian men's hockey team on Thursday written history after winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. They beat Germany by 5-4 to win India?s first Olympic medal in hockey after a gap of 41 years. This is India?s fourth medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.  Germany added early in the match and was leading 3-1 at one point in the match. But India made a superb comeback as Hardik Singh and Harmanpreet Singh?s goal equalized the scoreline for India.

Germany tried to fight back as Lukas Windfeder scored a goal to bring down the lead margin to one. But they missed a few penalties to lose the bronze medal match to India. The social media was abuzz with celebratory wishes for Team India. Former Indian cricketer and now a Politician, Gautam Gambhir lauded the team and also went on to add this win is bigger than any cricket World Cup win.

He wrote, ?Forget 1983, 2007 or 2011, this medal in Hockey is bigger than any World Cup! #IndianHockeyMyPride?.

 

Let us tell you that the Indian cricket team won their first-ever World Cup in 1983 under the direction of Kapil Dev. Notably, Gambhir was part of the other two World Cup wins in Indian cricketing history, the 2007 T20I World Cup and the 2011 50-over World Cup. For the Indian men?s hockey team, this was their 12th Medal at the Tokyo Olympics having previously won 8 Gold medals, 1 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals. The Indian women?s hockey team will take on Great Britain on Friday, August 6 in a quest to win the Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
