Guwahati: Former Assam Chief Minister and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha on September 21, 2021. The last date for filing nominations is September 22, 2021. Scrutiny is on 23rd September. As per the schedule of the Election Commission of India, the election will be held on October. 4, 2021. However, the opposition made it clear that they will not field any candidate for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in the state. So Sonowal was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from the state as no other candidate had filed his nomination for the vacant seat.
In the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP President Bhabesh Kalita, Water Resources Minister Piyush Harika, Union Minister Sonowal collected his winner's certificate from the Assam Assembly Secretariat in Dispur.
