Kolkata: Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma announced on Thursday that former BJP MP Roopa Ganguly was arrested after staging a dharna at Bansdroni police station. Ganguly was protesting the death of a 14-year-old schoolboy who was hit by an excavator in Kolkata’s Bansdroni on Wednesday.

According to Verma, multiple individuals were arrested for manhandling the police during the incident. Ganguly arrived at the police station and demanded their unconditional release. When the police refused and advised her to seek legal recourse, she began her sit-in protest, obstructing police activities. Despite repeated requests to leave, she refused, leading to her arrest. She was later produced in court.

Ganguly, a former Rajya Sabha MP, alleged that the incident involved aides of the local TMC councillor and criticized the police for not arresting the culprits promptly. She stated that the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident was not the original driver, and the men allegedly responsible were drunk at the time. Despite her peaceful protest, Ganguly was taken to Kolkata Police Headquarters at Lalbazar.

The tragic death of the young student has sparked tensions in the area, with Ganguly accusing local authorities of protecting those involved.
