Haridwar: Poonam Bhagat, a former Congress woman leader who was absconding after the death of daughter-in-law, has been arrested by the Jwalapur Police in Roorkee. The woman leader was absconding for the last 24 days. However, many other accused are still absconding in the case. The incident took place on February 24, when Yashika Gautam, the daughter-in-law of Poonam Bhagat, a resident of Jwalapur, Dewatan Mohalla, committed suicide. The father of Yasika, Mahendra Gautam had registered a case against women leader Poonam Bhagat, son Shivam Bhagat, Saubhagya Bhagat, Shivangi Parasar, Aman Parasar, and Kartik Vasistha, accusing them of murder for dowry.

The police had taken the elder son Shivam Bhagat from the spot. Other accused including women leader Poonam Bhagat was absconding in the case. The agitated people were protesting against the arrest of the accused. SSP Senthil Abudai Krishnaraj S had constituted a team to arrest the accused. On Friday, the police team has arrested the accused woman leader from Roorkee. Earlier, the Congress had ousted the woman leader from the party. Abhay Pratap Singh said that the woman leader has been sent to jail.

Women leader Poonam Bhagat was hiding for many days at Bhaat, Ramnagar in Nainital. There are some relatives of Poonam Bhagat. She later went to Delhi and then was hiding in Punjab also.
