New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit passed away in Delhi on Saturday, 20 July. She was 81 years old. Dikshit was the longest-serving Chief Minister of Delhi for a period of 15 years from 1998 to 2013. She was also the Governor of Kerala from March 2014 to August 2014
The veteran Congress leader died of a prolonged illness. Sheila Dikshit was a powerful administrator and leader. She was elected Chief Minister of Delhi thrice since 1998. She held the record of leading her party to three consecutive victories in New Delhi constituency in the Legislative Assembly of Delhi.
After Sushma Swaraj, she was the second female Chief Minister of Delhi. Her entry into Indian politics was coincidental. Her father-in-law was a renowned activist during India's independence struggle and later went on to become a union cabinet minister in the Indira Gandhi government.
