Chandigarh: Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala has been sentenced to four years in jail by a CBI court in connection with a disproportionate assets case. Along with this, the court has also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on Chautala. Not only this, the court has also ordered the confiscation of 4 properties of Om Prakash Chautala. These properties are located at Heli Road, Panchkula, Gurugram and Asola.

Earlier on Thursday, there was a debate on the former CM's conviction. During this time, the CBI counsel had opposed Chautala's arguments of illness and disability, saying that ill-health should be treated, but he should be given maximum punishment. The CBI had said that maximum punishment is required to be given to convey the right message to the general public. The CBI counsel had said that corruption is like cancer for the society, in the case of corruption, the court should give such a punishment so that an example can be given in the society.

The court said that Chautala will have to pay Rs 5 lakh separately to the CBI. Failure to pay 5 lakh can result in a more punishment of 6 months. The court ordered the detention of Chautala from the courtroom itself. Chautala's behalf had sought 10 days' time to file an appeal in the case. To this, the judge said that you go to the High Court.
