NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricket team opener VB Chandrasekhar passed away on Thursday night. Chandrasekhar was 57 years old and was about to celebrate his 58th birthday six days later. An official of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) informed that he was going to celebrate his 58th birthday on August 21.

Chandrasekhar, playing against Rest of India, hit a century with only 56 balls in 1988. It was the fastest century, India had scored in first-class cricket at that time. The opener played a key role in giving Tamil Nadu the Ranji Trophy title in 1987-88. In the quarter-finals, they scored 160 runs against Uttar Pradesh, while they were all out for 89 runs in the final.

For India, Chandrasekhar played a total of seven ODIs between 1988 and 1990. Chasing a victory target of 88 runs, New Zealand were all out for 53 runs in their first innings. In domestic cricket, Chandrasekhar scored 4999 runs in a total of 81 first-class matches with an average of 43.09. Unbeaten 237 was the biggest innings of his life.
