Former IIT Kanpur student donated Rs 100 crore to his institute

New Delhi: An alumnus has donated such a huge amount to his educational institution, which one will be surprised to hear. The amount is worth Rs 100 crore and has been donated to IIT-Kanpur (IIT-K). This is the biggest financial aid given by a former student in the history of the institute so far. This money has been given to help in the development of the School of Medical Sciences and Technology. 

Rakesh Gangwal, the co-founder of IndiGo airline and a billionaire businessman, has donated the amount to IIT-Kanpur. The money will also be used to build a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the campus. According to media reports, the project will cost around Rs 600 crore. Out of which Rs 350 crore has been raised so far. Director of IIT Prof. Abhay Karandikar said that the financial assistance from Rakesh Gangwal and the MoU will help in further improving the school of medical sciences and technology being set up in the institute, promoting research work. The MoU between IIT-Kanpur and Rakesh Gangwal was signed at an event in Mumbai on Monday. 

Rakesh Gangwal hails from Kolkata and studied mechanical engineering at IIT Kanpur in 1975. In 1980, he joined the airline industry and later became the co-founder of Indigo Airlines.  Earlier, Flipkart's Binny Bansal had also donated Rs 100 crore to IIT-Delhi.
