Mathura: The 40-day Holi Festival began in Mathura  on Sunday March 6, with bright colours and traditional rituals. Thousands of devotees gathered to celebrate 'Lathmar Holi.' Holi is one of India's most revered festivals, and it is celebrated in almost every part of the country.

The iconic Holi celebration in Mathura has begun, with devotees celebrating the festival at Guru Sharanand Ashram in Raman Reti of Gokul in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura. The 40-day festival began with devotees celebrating with Abir Gulal, flower petals, and sweet laddoos.

Holi is celebrated in the wildest, yet colourful and sane revelry on the ghats of Mathura – Krishna's birthplace. The Holi celebration here is a must-do experience, complete with sticks, shields, colours, and water canons.

Mathura Holi is undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for believers. Krishna and Radha's love life began and flourished in Mathura's outskirts. According to legend, Krishna was envious of her fairness and used to complain to his mother about his 'dusky' complexion. He used to throw colours at Radha and paint her face with multiple colours just to balance their skin tones. Krishna and his friends used to travel from Nandgaon to Barsana, Radha's village, to colour Radha and her friends. The girls used to beat the guys with sticks, albeit in a playful manner.
