Four more Congress MLAs are likely to switch to the BJP and its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), in Assam, according to governing party leaders. According to senior AGP politician and state health minister Keshab Mahanta, these MLAs are in contact with the BJP and AGP and may soon abandon the opposition party.

Bhabesh Kalita, the head of the BJP in Assam, also indicated on Friday that certain Congress members are in negotiations with the BJP and may formally join the party shortly. Former Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who was just re-elected on a BJP ticket, had stated that two of the four Congress MLAs will join the BJP and the other two the AGP.

Sashi Kanta Das, a Congress MLA from Raha, declared his political support for the BJP-led Assam government on December 20. Das met with chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, igniting suspicion that he might defect to the BJP, while he stated that he would remain in the Congress and that the meeting was to discuss developmental initiatives.

Das, according to Sarma, would stay a member of the Congress and support the BJP. "There are a variety of templates. He intends to keep in touch with BJP legislators. The majority of Congress members want to join the BJP, but where will they be accommodated, as there are few seats remaining in the assembly lobby," the chief minister asked at the time.

Sushanta Borgohain of the Congress and Phanidhar Talukdar of the AIUDF both deserted their parties and the assembly before running for the BJP in the October 30 by-elections.

After union minister and former state minister Sarbananda Sonowal resigned from the house upon his elevation to the Rajya Sabha, a by-poll is expected to be called for the Majuli seat.
