BERLIN – The French and German Ministries of Economic Affairs have announced that a total of 17.7 million euros (USD 20.1 million) will be invested in four 5G applications for private networks.

According to their announcement, the goal is to "provide new solutions that will boost Europe's ecosystem for private networks in the realm of 5G telecommunications." Robert Habeck, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, said, "I am looking forward to an active collaboration between France and Germany."

"This is a major step toward using cutting-edge technologies to propel the economy forward." According to reports, France and Germany agreed to deepen cooperation in the field of 5G applications in 2020 and then launched a request for funding of innovation projects in early 2021.

According to the announcement, the four projects will demonstrate the benefits of 5G in diverse application scenarios such as Industry 4.0 (the "fourth industrial revolution"), business parks, and smart operating theatres. "The creation of a Franco-German sovereign ecosystem on 5G and future telecoms network technologies will be critical in positioning Europe at the forefront of innovation in 5G and its evolutions," said Bruno Le Maire, France's Economy, Finance, and Recovery Minister.
