France to invest in Indian defence sector

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and France President Emmanuel Macron meet to hold bilateral talks at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

During the talks, both the leaders reviewed the progress achieved in bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest. In total, 14 agreements are signed through a joint statement of both the leaders.

In the speech, PM Modi said, "Liberty, equality and fraternity not only echo in France but are also deeply embedded in India's constitution."
He includes, "Apart from our (India-France) 20-year-old strategic partnership, our spiritual partnership and cultural partnership are linked for many centuries. We want our youth to know each other's countries, in this direction we have signed two agreements today."

The agreement includes the investments in defence sector from France under 'Make in India' programme. 

In the joint statement, France President Emmanuel Macron stated that "India and France have decided to work together to deal with threats of terrorism and radicalisation." Further, he added that "Defence cooperation between the two countries now has a new significance."

Agreements on security and nuclear energy were also part of the 14 agreements signed.

The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed that Suresh Prabhu, Cabinet Minister shall be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, in addition to his existing portfolio at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
