Free Wifi to more than 1000 Gram Panchayats, says government

In a bid to provide last mile connectivity in far area the biggest implement towards a digital and cashless economy, the government on the project to provide free WiFi hotpots at more than 1,000 Gram Panchayat.

The project called Digital Village will be rolled out in as many as 1,050 Gram Panchayat.

Aruna Sundararajan, secretary at Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology told ,"We will be partnering with the different service providers to do it. The project is a public private partnership, and will be driven through the common service centers (CSCs)".

CSCs are the nodal points in rural areas or villages for delivery of digital services.The project has been approved with a budget of Rs 433.26 crores and will be implemented over a period of three years.

The idea of the project is to demonstrate how the digital technologies and the connectivity delivered through BharatNet can be focused to provide basic development social sector such as health,education,skilling etc, on a scalable manner to improve the quality of life in rural areas.

The project is to connect broadband is done by Fibre optic connections. The implementation model proposed for Digital Village is similar to that of Aadhaar were service providers are paid based on the actual delivery of services.
