Dehradun: The wellness of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi, tributaries of Ganga, is not good. Micro-invertebrates, which make water fine, are becoming increasingly extinct due to pollution. This has been revealed by the research of experts of the Wildlife Institute of India. In many places from Gomukh to Devprayag in the Bhagirathi river, either friendly bacteria are completely absent or their figure is very low. The same situation has been found in the Alaknanda river from Mana to Devprayag  According to the scientists, the low finding of micro invertebrates in both the rivers is an indication that the water quality here is not good at the moment. The team of experts is preparing a detailed report.

Along the all-weather road, the debris of the development work being thrown on a large scale along the banks of the rivers is being dumped directly into the rivers. Dirty water coming out of the houses of cities situated on the banks of rivers is being flowed into the rivers without treatment. In the study conducted by hydrologists in the past, it has been revealed that a bacteria called Batriaphos is found in Ganga water, which keeps eating undesirable substances produced by chemical reactions within Ganga water.

At the same time, the purity of Ganga water is maintained. According to experts, due to the high amount of sulphur found in Ganga water, its purity is maintained and Ganga water does not spoil for a long time. Scientific studies have also revealed that other rivers of the country are able to clean themselves after the flow of 15 to 20 kilometres and the dirt found in the rivers accumulates at the bottom of the rivers. But the Ganga cleans itself in just one kilometre of flow. Friendly bacteria in both rivers were studied on the parameters of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT). If the EPT index is found to be twenty percent in the water of a river, then it proves that the quality of water is good. If the EPT index is more than thirty per cent, it means that the quality of water is very good. But in many places in both the rivers, the index of EPT has been found to be less than 15 per cent, which is a worrying aspect.
