(Libreville, Gabon) - In a significant development following the coup that ousted former President Ali Bongo Ondimba on August 30, Raymond Ndong Sima, a prominent critic of the ousted leader, has been appointed as the interim prime minister of Gabon.

This appointment was made by General Brice Oligui Nguema, the architect behind the coup that unseated Bongo. Ndong Sima, a 68-year-old economist, previously served as prime minister under Bongo's administration from 2012 to 2014. He later resigned and contested the 2016 presidential elections against Bongo, although he was unsuccessful in his bid.

Ndong Sima is widely recognized as a technocrat and a consensus builder with a reputation for moderation. His selection as interim prime minister reflects a desire to heal the divisions that have arisen in the wake of the coup.
