Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL India Ltd said on Monday that the pipeline will expand in the next five years. The company can invest Rs 1.05 lakh crore to build a city gas distribution network and increase petrochemical production capacity. At the same time, he said that there are plans to reach the consumers of East, North-East and South India through the gas pipeline. Along with this, the government is also working towards increasing the share of natural gas in the energy basket of the country from 6.2 percent to 15 percent.

With this, Jain said that capital expenditure of Rs 45,000 crore to Rs 50,000 crore for the pipeline, Rs 10,000 crore for the expansion of petrochemical capacity and Rs 40,000 crore for the city gas distribution business is planned. The vision is to create a gas-based economy to reduce its dependence on polluting fuels for its energy needs. GAIL is insisting on creating infrastructure in line with Prime Minister Modi's vision.

India currently consumes about 160 million standard cubic meters of gas and its share in the energy sector is going to be 15 percent to 600 mmcmd. GAIL is preparing infrastructure to help achieve this goal. With this, GAIL currently operates a 12,160 km gas pipeline network and markets two-thirds of all natural gases sold in the country. Along with this, Jain said that GAIL would increase the pipeline by about 7,000 km in the next five years.
