After returning from South Africa for the independence of India, Mahatma Gandhi started his efforts. He started it with the movement in Champaran, Bihar. Champaran of Bihar made Mahatma Gandhi a 'Mahatma'. But Champaran alone was not Bapu's field of work. After a few days of the Champaran movement, Gandhiji again came to Bhagalpur in Bihar. Here, he made people aware of the freedom struggle.

For your information, Bhagalpur was more affected by the earthquake in Bihar in 1934. Relief work was going on for the victims by Congress. To see this relief work, Bapu also reached Bhagalpur from Saharsa via Bihpur. Gandhiji while addressing the people at Lajpat Park in Bhagalpur, appealed to help in relief work and help the earthquake victims. During the gathering at Lajpat Park, volunteers collected donations from people who had bagged. There were many people in this gathering who wanted to take Gandhiji's autograph. Gandhiji gave his autograph to the people by taking 5-5 rupees. Bapu put money in the aid of earthquake victims by giving autograph.

Gandhiji stayed at Deep Narayan Singh's house in Bhagalpur. The building where Gandhiji was staying was later made the residence of the District Judge as per the wish of Deep Narayan Singh. This building is unique in Bihar due to its unique architecture and design. At present, talks are on with the government to include this building in the list of 'Heritage Buildings'. Mahatma Gandhi had come to Bhagalpur earlier in 1917 to address a student conference. For this conference, Krishna Mishra had done the work of organizing the students on the instruction of Deshratna Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
