Vinayaka Chaturthi Vrat Katha - One day Lord Shiva went to Bhogavati place from Mount Kailash to take a bath. After the departure, Goddess Parvati made an effigy from the scum of her body while bathing. Goddess Parvati gave life to the effigy and named it Ganesh. Goddess Parvati asked Ganesh to guard at the gate. Goddess Parvati said that unless I take a bath and come out, do not allow anyone to come inside. When Lord Shiva came back home after taking a bath in Bhogavati, he started going inside the house. But Bal Ganesh stopped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva considered it an insult and severed Lord Ganesha's head and went inside the house. When LordShiv reached inside, he was very angry.

Goddess Parvati thought that Mahadev is angry due to a delay in food. Therefore, immediately after serving food in 2 plates, Lord Shiv was called and requested to have food. Seeing the second plate, Lord Shiv asked Goddess Parvati, 'For whom is this second plate installed?' On this Goddess Parvati said that for the son Ganesh, who is guarding the door outside. Hearing this, Lord Shiva was shocked and told Goddess Parvati that, 'The child who was guarding outside, I have cut his head. On hearing this, Goddess Parvati was very sad and started mourning and requested Lord Shiva to revive the son. Then to please Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva cut off the head of an elephant's child and attached it to the child. Parvati was very happy to find son Ganesh alive again.
