Chennai: The Chennai city police arrested seven drug traffickers and seized 76.5 kg of ganja, 1,101 sedative tablets, and a small amount of methamphetamine.

On the basis of a tip, a special team led by the New Washermenpet police inspector conducted surveillance near the VOC Nagar railway station on Sunday. It discovered a young man acting suspiciously. When the police searched his bag, they discovered two kilogrammes of marijuana and five grammes of methamphetamine and arrested him. S. Rohit Manikandan, 26, of New Washermenpet, was identified as the suspect.

On the same day, another team led by an R.K. Nagar police inspector apprehended a young man who was hiding near a bush near the IOC bus terminal. According to police, he was found with 1,101 nitrazepam tablets and was selling them to local youth. Tondiarpet resident S. Jaffer Sadiq, 26, was arrested. The police began looking for his associate Ramesh, also known as G.H.Ramesh.

On Monday afternoon, Secretariat Colony police officers intercepted a goods carrier on New Avadi Road. As the driver came to a halt and fled, the police apprehended two other passengers in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle turned up 62.5 kg of ganja that had been smuggled in from another state. T. Pradeep Raj, 29, of Poonamallee, and J. Varadharaj, 36, of Villupuram district, were both apprehended. The vehicle was seized.
