NEW DELHI: 36-year-old Gautam Gambhir has stepped down as skipper of Delhi Daredevils with immediate effect, six matches into another below-par IPL season for the GMR-owned franchise. Gautam has been replaced by Shreyas Iyer who will lead the side against the next clash with Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday.

"It was my decision. I haven't contributed enough to the team. I had to take the responsibility being the leader of the ship. I feel it was the right time:", Gautam Gambhir on stepping down as captain of Delhi Daredevils IPL2018 as ANI tweeted.

Gambhir has so far managed to score 85 runs in five innings, of which 55 came in Daredevils' first game, As then, his scores are 8, 3 and 4.   Gambhir had Season strike-rate of 96.59 is higher than only Colin Munro (66), Daniel Christian (79.16) and Vijay Shankar (90) as per the Current states.

Delhi is currently struggling at the bottom of the IPL table, having registered just one win in six matches under the leadership of Gambhir. Delhi is tied with Mumbai Indians in terms of points, however, their net run-rate of -1.0 is less than that of the defending champions. Moreover, Gambhir's form with the bat hasn't been great either as he has struggled to change the fortunes of Delhi, something which he did exceedingly well during his time at Kolkata Knight Riders in previous seasons.
