Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, succeeding Rahul Dravid. This change comes as the team prepares for a busy schedule with crucial series and tournaments in all formats.

Gambhir, a left-handed batsman known for his key roles in India’s ICC title victories in 2007 and 2011, and for mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders to multiple IPL wins, is now set to guide the Indian team through an important transition period.

This transition follows the retirement of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20 internationals and Dravid stepping down after a successful tenure that saw India consistently reaching finals in ICC events across all formats. Dravid’s leadership, though yielding only one trophy, was marked by the team's notable performances.

Gambhir's coaching debut will be tested with a challenging tour to Australia, a resilient opponent. The Indian team currently tops the ICC World Test Championship standings after a dominant 4-1 series win against England. However, upcoming series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia will be crucial tests for Gambhir's leadership.

In the ODI format, India is looking for redemption after a narrow loss in the World Cup final at home. With the Champions Trophy and another Cricket World Cup on the horizon, Gambhir is expected to plan for the future beyond Rohit Sharma’s leadership.

In the T20 format, the team is in a rebuilding phase following the retirements of key players like Rohit, Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. Identifying a new captain and key positions will be critical for Gambhir as India prepares to defend their title at home in 2027.
