New Delhi: Over the past few years, India has had tremendous success as a Test side, winning on international tours and dominating at home unlike any other team in the past. However, the team's failure to win the championship under either Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma has made their losses in the last two World Test Championship finals into something of a rod to bash them with.

While reaching two finals in a row is impressive due to notable victories in Australia, England, and South Africa, India's inability to translate great performances into real victory is a key point of criticism. Failures in ICC knockouts have also frequently become a source of concern, so there has been discussion about holding team members more accountable in order to encourage better performances in crucial situations.

Sunil Gavaskar, a former captain of India and renowned batter, has recently gained notoriety for his calls for the team's captains and coaches to accept greater responsibility. Gavaskar spoke out against the security that current Indian captains receive in an interview, drawing criticism for how they were permitted to carry on without any questions asked.

"Whether you win or lose, the captain knows that he is going to be there. This has not been a recent case, mind you. This has been happening since 2011. There have been results where we have been wiped out in the series 0-4, 0-4 but the captain hasn't changed," said the former India captain.

This query may be directed towards MS Dhoni, who led disastrous tours of England and Australia in 2011–12. The Test squad was destroyed by their hosts despite being ranked first in the world at the time, even though he had won the World Cup for India earlier in the year.

The performances of the Indian team were dismal throughout those two tours, which saw England and Australia beat India 4-0.

Dhoni served as the red-ball team's captain until 2014, when Virat Kohli took over as captain for the first time during that year's tour of Australia. Two series victory in Australia, success in England, and a nearly perfect home record were all highlights of Kohli's captaincy. Nevertheless, Rohit Sharma would take his place during the series in South Africa in 2021–2022.

After a lacking performance against Australia in the final, Rohit's tactics and leadership have come under attack. He guided the team's advancement to another WTC final. In addition, concerns have been expressed over India's policy of having a single all-format captain, as the majority of other nations entrust various formats to several leaders to lessen the workload and serve the objective of the game.

For the time being, Rohit is still captain, leading a rebuilt India in the West Indies and contributing to Yashasvi Jaiswal's century in Dominica. Rohit's first significant overseas assignment will be the tour of South Africa in December of this year, following an important white-ball season that included the Asia Cup and World Cup.

He was unable to participate in the tour two years ago owing to a hamstring injury, but what better way to make up for it than by helping India win their first-ever Test series in South Africa.
