GCC to conduct meetings in English for students of Classes 6 to 9

CHENNAI:  The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has ordered the schools under its control to hold Wednesday morning sessions for students in Classes 6 through 9 in English in an effort to improve the kids' English-speaking skills.

Recent research by the GCC revealed that many students lack English communication skills, and in a bid to improve this the corporation authorities have taken up the Wednesday English-speaking project.

corporation's education department in its study found that only 8,037 of the 30,782 students in Classes 6 to 9 were judged to be able to speak effectively in English.

Officials from the corporation's education department who took part in the study claimed that it was done to find out more about the students' communication abilities. The department has also instructed the teachers to speak with each student privately and address their issues.

According to the GCC officials, attempts are being made to re-enroll students who left school due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Since the outbreak, over 6,000 students have missed school, and the corporation has started working to get them back.

The corporation has also instructed the school management of the school to hire temporary teachers. The Chennai Corporation has taken action to organise counselling sessions for teachers hired by private schools, especially in terms of language skills.
