NEW DELHI: On Friday, Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan took over as the nation's second Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). Since the first CDS General Bipin Rawat passed away in December 2021, the position has been vacant for more than nine months.

In his first speech as CDS, he thanked the forces and made a commitment to uphold expectations and work with them to overcome any issues that may arise.

Before officially taking over, CDS Chauhan lay a wreath at the National War Memorial and afterward viewed a tri-service Guard of Honour on the South Block lawns. Later, CDS visited Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, in his South Block office.

"Assuming the duties of the highest level in the Indian Armed Forces makes me proud. As the Chief of Defence Staff, I'll do my best to live up to the demands of the three armed forces. Together, we will meet all problems and overcome all obstacles", he said.

General Manoj Pande, the head of the Indian Army, Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari, Vice Admiral S.N. Ghormade, the head of the Navy, and Air Marshal B.R. Krishna were also in attendance.

On Wednesday, the Centre had announced Chauhan's selection as the new Chief of Defence Staff.

Gen. Chauhan, who was born on May 18th, 1961, joined the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. On May 31 of last year, while holding the position of Eastern Army Commander, he retired from the military. Following his retirement, he worked as the military advisor to Ajit Doval, the NSA, who was in charge of the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).
