Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Thursday that Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat was a staunch supporter of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' in defence production and was instrumental in the country's indigenous production of weaponry and equipment.

"General Rawat played a huge influence in inspiring DRDO and other organisations to flourish in their achievements in defence production," he told reporters at Vidhana Soudha. He campaigned for technology transfer to stimulate private sector engagement in defence industry, in addition to research and development of contemporary weapon systems and equipment.

"General Rawat had taken a posture on a number of matters concerning India's security that was unusual. During the latest border standoff, his tough stance towards China forced Chinese troops to retire. His leadership was also required for the coming years by the nation "Bommai remarked. "General Rawat, the Chief of Defence Staff, had a strong connection to Karnataka, particularly Kodagu. "Bommai added.
