Germany: New German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his country is ready to work closely with the European Union (EU) and other member states to make Europe "strong and sovereign" after a lengthy day of meetings in Paris and Brussels. Scholz, who was sworn in as Merkel's successor on Wednesday, followed in his predecessor's footsteps by making France his first destination on his first trip overseas as chancellor, the source quoted.

Scholz promised to cooperate with France on the biggest difficulties facing the EU during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders talked about the EU's future in terms of immigration, new energy sources, border security, and relations with other countries.

"A convergence of views, a willingness to have our countries work together, and a solid and determined belief in Europe, which I knew already, and which we will need in the months and years ahead," Macron said following the meeting at a press conference. In terms of the economy, security, and foreign policy, Scholz said their discussions focused on "making Europe strong and sovereign." "What matters is that we collaborate," he said.

The discussion came a day after Macron outlined his vision for a "strong Europe in the world" during France's rotating presidency of the European Union's 27-member Council in the first half of 2022.
