JERUSALEM – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Israel on Tuesday night for a quick visit while the Russian-Ukraine war rages on.
Scholz landed at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv for a trip that was originally scheduled to last three days but was cut short due to the Russia-Ukraine situation, according to reports.
Scholz and Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will visit Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, on Wednesday morning before holding a private discussion, said Bennett's office.
As per the statement released by the Knesset, Scholz will also meet with Speaker Mickey Levy of the Knesset.
Scholz remarked on Twitter after his arrival, "The unshakable friendship with Israel is an issue important to my heart," adding that he is "particularly looking forward to tomorrow's meeting with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett." He continued, "Even if the situation in Ukraine will keep us quite busy."
