BUCHAREST: Germany's reliance on Russian energy has decreased dramatically. During a visit to Bucharest, German President Frank Walter Steinmeier stated that Germany's reliance on Russian energy resources has been significantly reduced.

According to reports, Germany's dependence on Russian oil is currently 15%. Steinmeier spoke at a joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday. The Romanian President stated that his country is in favour of the European Commission's planned ban on Russian oil, which would be phased in over six months.

Bucharest authorities are currently working on long-term solutions that can be implemented quickly, according to Iohannis.  "Romania wants to be a key player in fulfilling the EU's strategic goals for diversifying its natural gas supply," he stated.

The two presidents also discussed the assistance provided to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, support for the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia joining the EU, and Romania's expectations for Schengen membership.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree imposing punitive sanctions on persons and businesses for their "unfriendly activities" in the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine. The Russian government has been given ten days to create a list of sanctioned individuals.
