Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has sought a response from senior Congress leader and the Ministry of Human Resource Development from Thiruvananthapuram asking a German student to leave the country. This student was studying science from IIT Madras. He was asked to leave the country because he participated in the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Quoting a media report, Shashi Tharoor tweeted, 'This is disappointing. We used to have a proud democracy, which is an example for the world. No democracy punishes for freedom of expression. I called Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank (HRD Minister) to direct IIT Madras to withdraw the student's expulsion. So that India's head stands high in the academic world.'

The name of this German student is Jacob Lindethal who lives in Dresden. He enrolled in the MS program in August this year under the Xench program. He said that the immigration authorities scold him for taking part in the protest against the citizenship law and asked him to leave the country. He said that his department staff informed him that he had been summoned by the immigration officials. Jacob said, "I went there (immigration office) and the initial conversation was very friendly. So I told them everything. After this, they started telling me bitterly why I took part in the protest against the citizenship law. Then I realized that the matter has become serious."
