Frankfurt: A large fire that burned down several warehouses early on Sunday in Hamburg, Germany, caused black, chemical-filled smoke to drift over the city, prompting police to issue a warning to residents to shut their windows.
According to the German news agency dpa, the fire started at 4:30 a.m. in the Rothenburgsort neighbourhood of the second-largest city in Germany's eastern region. Long-distance trains between Hamburg and Berlin and other cities were stopped as the smoke moved from that location towards the city centre.
Hamburg residents were urged to lock their windows, turn off the ventilation and air conditioning, and to stay away from the area after receiving a public safety alert via a mobile phone app. There were no reported injuries.

According to public broadcaster NDR, the fire involved containers containing toxic and foul-smelling hydrogen sulphide, which required nearby firefighters and police officers to wear breathing apparatus.
