ACCRA : Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged member states of the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) to take concerted efforts to combat terrorism in West Africa.
The call was made on Sunday at the opening remarks of the 61st Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Akufo-Addo is also the Chairman of the regional bloc.
"Our region remains the target of indiscriminate and savage terrorist assaults, leading to the killing of numerous innocent lives and the worsening of the humanitarian situation in the targeted nations." Akufo-Addo said. He said that terrorist assaults in West Africa are currently spreading to the coastline states in the subregion and Sahel.
In order to eliminate the menace of terrorism and insecurity in West Africa, he asked the subregion to keep carrying out the regional action plan against terrorism and coordinate other relevant actions.
Insisting on the subregional bloc to be prepared to go above and beyond to safeguard the stability of the community and the various member states, he said that the threats could only be neutralised via coordinated efforts and the collective commitment to fight the terrorists with a united front.
