Hyderabad: 340 survey teams were formed to inspect commercial buildings in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits whose upper storeys were constructed without permission and brought them under the purview of property tax. There are 17,34,411 commercial and residential buildings under GHMC limits, but so far only 9,06,486 of them have paid property tax. GHMC has issued notice to all the rest.

“If the citizen does not pay the property tax on time, a penalty of 2 per cent per month will have to be paid. Further, in case of default in payment, property tax is payable at the rate of 2 per cent per month for three months in one and a half years with total penalty of six per cent. Notice of demand will be issued for the second half. For the first six months from April to September, there will be no penalty for the first three months i.e. April, May and June. Similarly, demand notices will be issued in October for the remaining six months. Here too, there will be no penalty for the months of October, November and December. A fine of 2 per cent per month will be imposed in the other three months January, February and March and the same for the remaining three months in the second half of the year i.e. July, August and September. Those who do not pay property tax for one year will have to pay a 24 per cent penalty,'' an official said.

Meanwhile, the special teams formed persuaded the owners of the buildings to update the use of the buildings and to apply voluntarily for the revision of the property tax. As a result, 49,439 voluntarily came forward for revision of wealth tax and their applications are being scrutinized.
