NEW DELHI: After veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was denied a nomination for the Rajya Sabha, Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi tried to appease him by providing him the party's number two post. According to sources, the move failed to appease Azad, who refused to accept the offer.

As per reports, after Sonia Gandhi's phone conversation to Azad on Sunday, the two met and discussed party concerns. According to sources, Azad was offered a position in the organisation that might be number two in the party hierarchy, but the seasoned leader declined.

Azad, who was denied a Rajya Sabha seat at the last minute, is dissatisfied with the state of the party. And has exhibited no interest in the organisation, telling Sonia Gandhi that "new people should work because the party is going through a generational transformation." Azad and his supporters are also dissatisfied with the way the party operates in his native state of J&K, and neither Azad nor his supporters participated in the recent state-wide 'Chintan Shivir.'

This obviously demonstrated that things aren't going well. His backers want him to be the party's face in the state. In its ten-candidate list for the Rajya Sabha, Congress passed over Anand Sharma and Azad in favour of Imran Pratapgarhi.
