Guwahati: On Thursday night, a giraffe at the Assam State Botanical Garden-cum-Zoo in Guwahati died. Rongili, the giraffe, was transported from Patna in 2019 and died on Thursday about 10.30 p.m. after choking in a sad circumstance.

"At first glance, the evidence suggests that it was an unintentional death... "A post mortem is being conducted, and further investigation will show the actual reason of death," Ashwini Kumar, the Assam Zoo's Divisional Forest Officer in-charge, told EastMojo. According to sources, the giraffe choked to death after mistakenly wrapping a green tarpaulin sheet around its neck.

As part of an animal exchange programme sanctioned by the central zoo administration, two giraffes called Rongili and Kulananda were transferred to Assam in 2019. With Rongili's passing, the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden at Japorigog, Guwahati, currently has just Kulananda as a giraffe.
