Girish Karnad was an Indian actor, film director, Kannada writer, playwright and Rhodes scholar, who worked mainly in South Indian cinema and Bollywood. His rise as a playwright in the 1960s marked the era of modern Indian drama writing in Kannada, as did the Badal government in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi. He was the recipient of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour in India.

Girish Karnad's departure has created a void in the world of Hindi drama and theatre. Girish ji was the most conscious voice of his time. His creative world, spread from theatre and literature to the movie world, was vast and comprehensive.

Girishji's world of stories and experience was different for every individual, institution. He appeared as a social worker among many, while many recognize him as a playand painter.
