The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced that Gita Gopinath, the IMF's senior economist, will take over as the institution's First Deputy Managing Director (FDMD) early next year, succeeding Geoffrey Okamoto.

"Gita Gopinath has precisely the skills that we need for the FDMD post at this juncture," IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva remarked, "especially considering that the epidemic has led to an increase in the volume and complexity of the macroeconomic issues facing our member nations." "Her unique skill set, along with her years of experience as Chief Economist at the Fund, make her uniquely equipped. She is the right person in the right place at the right moment "Georgieva said.

The FDMD will be in charge of monitoring and related policies, as well as overseeing research and flagship publications and assisting in the development of the highest quality standards for Fund publications.

According to the IMF, Gopinath, a US national and Indian foreign citizen, would begin her new role as FDMD on January 21, 2022.
