Global Covid Updates: Thailand registers 3,394 new cases, 29 deaths

BANGKOK: Thailand country on Wednesday reported 3,394 new Covid-19 cases and 29 more deaths as it continued to grapple with the worst virus outbreak so far.

Of the new cases, 3,377 were domestic infections, with 1,498 being confirmed via active testing at prisons, while 17 others were imported cases, the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangsan told a daily news briefing.

The new cases still concentrated in the capital Bangkok and its vicinity regions. Some 876 new infections were reported in Bangkok, where 34 clusters have been detected, Xinhua reported.

The infections raised the country's total caseload to 116,949, more than quadrupling from the start of April, when the latest outbreak began to spread from Bangkok. The 29 fresh fatalities pushed the toll to 678.

The other worst countries with over 3 million cases are Brazil (15,732,836), France (5,959,593), Turkey (5,139,485), Russia (4,900,995), the UK (4,466,218), Italy (4,167,025), Spain (3,619,848), Germany (3,615,896), Argentina (3,371,508) and Colombia (3,144,547), the CSSE figures showed.

Nations with a death toll of over 100,000 are India (278,719), Mexico (220,493), the UK (127,953), Italy (124,497), Russia (114,619) and France (108,201).
