NEW DELHI: The Bombay High Court has discontinued the central government from taking coercive steps or penalising jewellers who have not complied with mandatory gold hallmarking till Jun 29.

The court said it was not inclined to stay the effect and operation of the order on Jan 15 making hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts compulsory, but asked the authorities to give jewellers more time due to the pandemic. It also directed the government to set up more hallmarking centres across the state.

While High Court said that it was not inclined to stay the effect and operation of the January 15 order, it has asked the authorities to give jewellers more time owing to the pandemic. The bench also directed the Centre to set up more hallmarking centres across 22 out of the 26 districts in Maharashtra, which currently do not have such centres.
