Kolkata: The West Bengal government will appoint more than 32,000 upper primary and primary level teachers by March in the coming year. CM Mamata Banerjee made the announcement on Monday. Banerjee informed that the appointment process for filling up at least 14,000 vacant posts in upper primary level (class 5-8) and 10,500 vacancies in primary level (class 1-4) will be completed before Durga Puja in October. About 7,500 more posts of primary teachers will be appointed by March 2022.

About 32,000 teachers will be appointed by March next year, the CM said. He said the appointments will be made on merit list basis and no lobbying will be required. The CM further said that those who have passed the exam are eligible for the job. The appointments were stuck due to court cases. The Calcutta High Court had in February ordered an interim ban on the recruitment process for primary teachers.

The same order was passed after petitions filed by job aspirants who alleged discrepancies after their names did not figure in the merit list issued by the West Bengal Primary Education Board. The High Court later directed the West Bengal Kendriya Vidyalaya Seva Commission (WBSSC) to ensure that eligible candidates are not released and the recruitment process is conducted in a transparent manner. The Calcutta High Court had initially asked the Commission to publish the interview list by May 10.
