Gauhar Jaan's real name was Angelina Yeoward. She was born in Azamgarh. Her father was an engineer, then mother Victoria was trained in music and dance, and from here, Gauhar Jaan, i.e Angelina, got a taste for dance and music. In 1879 Angelina's mother got married, after which she came to Benares. Later, she accepted Islam and converted her daughter's name along with her name. The name Gauhar was kept by changing the daughter's name from Angelina.

You would be surprised to know that Gauhar Jaan had sung Thumri in 20 languages. She was the first singer in South Asia, whose songs were recorded by the Gramophone Company and she was given about 3000 rupees for the song. Gauhar Jaan had become very famous due to her talent and lived with great affection. She used to wear new clothes and jewellery for her every recording, but in her last days, Gauhar was completely alone. His relatives did not take her advice nor they took care of her propelry.
