After onion supply has improved at the domestic level, exports have started easing. Apart from this, on Thursday, the government allowed the export of Krishnapuram onions. At present, only 10 thousand tonnes of Krishnapuram onion have been allowed to be exported to the domestic markets to keep prices under control. The same Krishnapuram onion is a variety of onion produced in Andhra Pradesh. Also, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said that by the end of March, only 10,000 tonnes of onion can be exported, and it will be allowed to export from Chennai Port itself.
Krishnapuram onion is not used in the kitchen due to its size and pungent taste. Along with this, these onions are buying in countries like Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Singapore. Due to lack of sales in domestic markets, its farmers are suffering. The notification issued by the DGFT states that onion exporters will have to obtain a license from the horticulture department of Andhra Pradesh. Apart from this, it should clearly specify the quantity of onions exported. Apart from this, the local office of DGFT will also have to be made aware of this.
During this time, DGFT clarified that apart from Krishnapuram onion, no other type of onion can be exported. It is being told that the price of onion in the domestic market started touching the sky. Due to this, in September last year, the government banned onion exports. Along with this, onion storage was also brought under the control. Some softness has been recorded in the price of onion in the domestic market. Currently, it is still being sold up to Rs 60 a kg in the local markets of Delhi.
