Airforce to get a big boost, Government approves project worth 5000 crore

New Delhi: The central government is engaged in boosting the Air Force. In view of the increasing tension with Pakistan and China, the government has decided to strengthen the air force. In this series, the government has approved the Rs 5000 crore Akash Missile Project. The Cabinet Committee on Security, headed by the PM, recently approved the project. The Defense Ministry conveyed this decision of the government to the Air Force on Thursday.

The government has approved the purchase of six squadrons indigenous Akash Air Defense Missile Systems to enhance the Air Force's capability to shoot down enemy fighter aircraft. Sources said that this proposal, which was three years old to buy the Akash missile, has now been approved and this will increase the number of Akash missiles in the Air Force to 15 now. The Air Force had demanded two squadrons, but the number was increased in view of its efficiency.

The Akash missile was also tried by the Air Force during the Surya Lanka maneuvers last year, along with the Israeli missile and other missiles which had the best sky performance. The Ministry of Defense preferred Akash against foreign missiles. The government also scrapped the Army's Rs 17000 crore tender in favor of Akash missile. These missiles will be deployed near the border of Pakistan and China. After the Balakot operation, the government was aware of the need for this missile.
