New Delhi: The Government of India has blocked 104 YouTube channels and 45 YouTube videos for spreading fake and misleading information. The government has said that these can create rumors or fear. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has given this information in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday (December 22). Earlier this week, YouTube blocked three channels with over 30 crore views and 33 lakh subscribers for spreading misinformation about the Supreme Court of India, the Chief Justice of India, PM Narendra Modi, and the Election Commission of India.
Actually, Anurag Thakur was answering a question of BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Jugal Singh Lokhandwala. The question was about the spread of 'fake news' being circulated through digital platforms. To which Anurag Thakur said that we have taken action against those channels that have tried to mislead and create fear and division in the society under Section 69A of the IT Act. He said that we have banned 104 YouTube channels and blocked 45 videos, 4 Facebook accounts and 2 posts, 3 accounts on Instagram, 5 Twitter accounts, and 3 podcasts. We have also taken strict action against 2 apps and 6 websites. The ministry will not shy away from taking such stern action to safeguard the security of the country.
On the question of misleading advertisements of BJP's Rajya Sabha member Rakesh Sinha targeting children of sexual nature, Anurag Thakur said that any such advertisement that violates the rules is immediately identified and notices are sent to the creators.
