For your information, Gadkari said that in view of the increase in pollution in the country, such a policy needs to be implemented as old vehicles and old technology are responsible for this. He said pollution is becoming a major challenge for our country and the message delivered at the Climate Conference held in Paris on the environment needs to be addressed. Replying to a question on banning 15-year-old commercial vehicles, Gadkari said that a policy will be formulated soon to check pollution of commercial vehicles more than 10 years old and will be implemented soon after Cabinet approval. However, no decision has yet been taken on the 15-year-old commercial vehicles.

A policy was already introduced by the government in 2018, under which old vehicles will not be allowed to play on the country's roads from April 1, 2020. On the other hand, work is on to make the vehicle junk policy more attractive. The vehicle junk policy will allow those who are more than 15 years old to purchase a new commercial vehicle of at least Rs 15 lakh. The policy has also received in-principle approval from the Prime Minister's Office. The policy of the Ministry of Road Transport Highways, which was aimed at removing 20-year-old commercial vehicles from the road, was called the Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernization Program. Under the scheme, 2.8 crore vehicles were to be removed from the road, which would benefit the auto sector and the government would get a revenue of Rs 10,000 crore. It proposes to remove vehicles purchased before March 31, 2005. It will be known in due course of time as to what will be the verdict in this case.
