NEW DELHI: Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra said on Friday that the government will hand over 20-25 airports to private hands. It was decided to privatize the airports in Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mangaluru, Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati for operations, management and development, according to the Public-Private Partnership.

In February, the Adani Group had secured a contract for five of the six airports from the government. "These will be 20-25 major airports through which 10-15 lakh passengers are able to travel annually. '

Mohapatra will take over as Secretary, Department of Industry and Internal Trade on August 1. According to the report on Thursday, air traffic is continuously advancing and it may touch the 100-crore mark in the coming years. This was disclosed by Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

In 2018, the government decided to lease out airports in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Mangaluru, and Thiruvananthapuram. Puri had reported that at present the number of air passengers on an annual basis is around 34.5 crore and this shows that it will reach 100 crores.
