To boost the safety of passengers in cars, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed to make airbags mandatory for front passengers. The Ministry issued a draft notifies that the government has proposed the implementation of a new rule in modern car models from April 1, 2020. Talking about the existing models, its timeline has been kept as June 1, 2020.

All the concerned shareholders have been invited to give their suggestions on the matter by next month. Earlier, Airbag was made mandatory for drivers by the union government from July 2019. The notification issued by the ministry reads, "In a significant measure to boost passenger safety, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposes to make it mandatory that an airbag be provided for the passenger seated on the front seat of a vehicle, next to the driver. The proposed timelines for implementation are 01st April 2021 for new models and 01st June 2021 for existing models."

The transport ministry has been discussing whether only a seat belt is enough to ensure the safety of the passenger sitting on the front seats of the car next to the driver or making airbags mandatory is important.
