Government takes big decision regarding Sonepat Municipal Corporation Election

The government has got six months more time to conduct the election of Sonepat Municipal Corporation of Haryana. After the formation of the Municipal Corporation, the government had to conduct elections in 5 years, but it could not happen. There was a time period for holding elections till July 2020 but due to Corona there was a delay. In view of this, the Government has passed the Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2020 in the Legislative Assembly.

According to Section 4 (4) of the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, the first election of the newly formed Municipal Corporation is required to be done within a period of 5 years from the date of formation. According to this, the election of Municipal Corporation Sonepat was expected to be held by 5 July 2020 but due to Covid-19, the election could not be conducted. Therefore, within 5 years and six months from the date of formation of the Municipal Corporation, the administration of the newly formed Municipal Corporation can now be elected.

In this Act, there is no provision for allotment of municipal land to the social, religious, charitable institution, trust, institutions for social, religious and charitable purposes. Provision of up to 5 acres of land to Nandisala, Gaushala and destitute animal courts has been made in the policy of Urban Local Department. Nuh Municipality of Haryana will get the status of Municipal Council.

The government has made a provision in the Legislative Assembly by amending the Municipal Act, 1973 and passing the Haryana Municipal Amendment Bill -2020. Nuh will get special status of the city council since the population of the municipality area is not enough. At present, there are 22 cities in Haryana, Municipal Corporation or Municipal Council are in existence on their offices in 21 districts. Whereas, Nuh has a municipality at its district office.
