The Government of India is testing a multimedia messaging app that will be much like WhatsApp and Telegram. The code name of this app is GIMs i.e. Government Instant Messaging System. It is currently being tested in Odisha and will be the first to be used by the Indian Navy as a trial. According to the report of the Indian Express, the GIMs app has been designed by the National Information Center, Kerala Unit and this center are also preparing it.

This app will be used by government employees and government organizations for official communication. The iOS version of GIMs was released in early September of the same year for iOS 11 and above. Apart from this, work is also going on in the Android version. Along with this, it is also being said that the Finance Department of the Government of Odisha is testing this app through a pilot project in its department. All employees have also been asked to install the app on their phones.

Actually, it has been decided to launch this app due to the increasing security reasons with foreign apps like Facebook and WhatsApp. The GIMs app will also be encrypted end-to-end, although it will be for private chatting only, not for groups. It is being told that a few months ago, WhatsApp accounts of many people around the world including Indian social workers were spied. After that, a letter was also written to the Government of India in this regard. WhatsApp itself said that people were spied under the Pigasus software.
