Ranchi: News of work for 45 lakh MGNREGA workers of Jharkhand has come to light. The Jharkhand government will now give Rs 2 lakh to the dependents of the labourers working in MGNREGA for their death at the time of work. The labourers working under this scheme brought by the Government of Jharkhand are victims of accidental death or belong to the poorest families of the unnatural state. In case of death (including murder) or permanent death of any such labourer who is naturally handicapped, the government will give two lakh rupees in case of death due to unnatural reasons.
The same proposal has been prepared by the Department of Rural Development. This will come into effect after the cabinet's seal is given. Earlier, the government used to give 75 thousand rupees. MGNREGA is a demand-driven Centrally Sponsored Scheme. The aim is to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members want to do unskilled manual work. The labourers working under this scheme are the people of the poorest families in the state. If such a labourer dies of natural or unnatural reasons, the economic condition of the family becomes absolutely pitiable. That is why the Department of Rural Development has given its proposal to amend the provision introduced in 2011. At present, there is a provision of ex-gratia grant in case of death or accident of MGNREGA workers.
Under the same provision, it has also been kept that if a person is injured due to an accident, he will be given Rs 1 lakh. On average, 4 lakh workers work under the MGNREGA scheme in Jharkhand. This provision will give a sense of mental security to those working in the scheme.
