Kolkata: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has decided to take oath as MLA in the Assembly on October 7. She has written to the governor of the state Jagdeep Dhankhar urging him to be present at the swearing-in ceremony. However, what Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has said in response to the letter seems to be putting a screw in Mamata Banerjee's oath.

In fact, the Bengal Speaker had written to the Governor on October 1 appealing to him to be given powers from the Governor to administer the oath to the three candidates who won the by-election, including Mamata Banerjee. But Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has rejected the appeal. State Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in his reply said that a decision on oath or membership to new MLAs will be taken after notification of election results is issued. He wrote in his reply that the appeal made by the government and the Speaker over the oath is based on a misinterpretation of the law. The Governor has said that a decision will be taken only after the election results are notified and the concerned authority sends information to them.

Mamata Banerjee has won the Bye-election to the Bhowanipore assembly seat. She had lost to BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari from the Nandigram seat during the assembly elections held in the state. In that case, she was required to subscribe to the Assembly within 6 months to remain CM. Mamata Banerjee wants to be sworn in as soon as she can. But the Governor and the Mamata government have been at loggerheads over a number of issues for a long time.
